Back From The Dead.

I haven’t posted anything for ages, but now I have returned, I changed the look of my Blog, cus’ I really respect this layout, and have used it on another blog of mine, it works for me and I hope it works for you (whoever you are, please leave a comment, as its nice to know who looks at this stuff).

A few updates, I finished University, Graduated, I live in Bristol now with my Girlfriend, which is all good.

My Direction hasn’t changed I still plan on doing what I planned (making T-shirt’s and Designing) I have just slowed down, sorting out my habitat and job.

Watch this space, as Im going to try and dedicate it to my creative work, musical interests and anything I want to share.

Changes in Foresight.

The last couple of months have been especially hard for me, in choosing what I want to do with my life. My University time is almost up, and I think everyone at this point in life really does question ‘Where am I going?’.

As an artist I wanted to start my own T-shirt design company, and I still very much do, but after toiling over it in my head, I just don’t think im ready for a commitment like that straight away. I feel I need to develop myself as an artist more, try and craft a style (which I could moan for hours about) and attempt not to emulate another. I have so many good ideas (in my opinion), and can be described as an idea factory, but never get them down and done, because of other commitments. Mostly University work to be honest.

I have also seen the light when it comes to my degree, its not for me, yeah its Art, but its has a certain lack of freedom, no matter which way you look at it. And I think anyone that’s leaving/left Uni, realizes that a degree counts for *beep* all today.

My chosen subject of Animation is tedious, its not like painting a picture, or drawing. Its about doing the same thing again and again, with careful planning, there is no sense of spontaneity, which some people like, but I think it grounds me. You have to plan (for industry) I can’t just pick up a pencil or a mouse/graphics tablet pen and start scrawling away. Don’t get me wrong I completely respect the it and all the people involved, but again, its not for me.

So after mass deliberation with myself, I think above all I crave the freedom of ‘no homework’, and a steady job with steady income (I’ve got everything else, loving family and girlfriend), that requires me to go home and rest and not worry about what tomorrow brings. I think in the next year or so is when I will really discover what I want to be, even if it is just another person stuck in the rat race, that goes home and quietly paints in his room.

Caspa And Rusko

So I was recently asked to make some posters for Caspa and Rusko, playing at SubClub in Newport. and here is what I came up with. Random is the most descriptive word I can come up with for them. Caspa poster is meant to represent ‘Casper the (not so) friendly ghost’ returning from the ‘Ghost-busters Ghost trap (Classic retro for all you fans), and the Rusko poster, I just did on a whim. I was going to include loads of tanks with speakers on them in the background, but didn’t as I feared I would run out of room for text. I think on the next poster I will create something symmetrical and not weighted to either side. As you can see I still haven’t worked out how convert ai. files to jpeg. yet…. what happened to true black? silly me, all in good time I suppose.

Three Hip-Hop Artists I Suggest You Listen To…

This was going to be ‘my top 5 hip-hop artists’ but to my realization I found it quite hard to catalog them into numerical order. So instead i’m just going to suggest some, three to be precise.

1. Public Enemy

Chuck D, Flava Flav, Professer Griff, DJ Lord, (and formerly) Terminator X.

I’d always heard about Public Enemy and heard there songs on random occasions but it wasn’t till last year that I actually properly started listening to them. They are from New York, the birthplace of Hip Hop in my opinion. Political rap that has History, Chuck D is complimented by Flava Flav’s Delicious shouting and wit. I love this type of rap because they had something to talk about, over ‘guns and hoes’, a political message always outshines that of the modern ‘show off’ gangsta rap we’re used to hearing.

Songs I suggest Fight The Power, the chilled out He Got Game and the Heavy Bring the Noise ft. Anthrax. Also to make note I don’t think any Hip Hop bling can ever beat a massive clock, Flava Flav wins all.

2. Planet Asia

aka King Medallion (Jason Green)

The first time I heard Planet Asia was on the Linkin’ Park Song from the Reanimation Album; PPR:Kut, occupied with Rasco, his part in this is minor .

It wasn’t until I heard him again in the Legion of Doom song Icarus Underwater (which is a Armor for Sleep Vs Hopefall Mash Up, ft Planet Asia) that I really started to appreciate his style, may sound wired but I love the sound of his voice, it is chilled yet meaningful. Strong connections within his lyrics, rhyme and great metaphors. He also chooses to create songs with other artists I enjoy, which always helps.

3. Immortal Technique

Felipe Andres Coronel

‘The best hip hop artist’…. thats going to be the first thing I say.

He is self made, well read and sells his own stuff under his own record label (Viper), he doesn’t have to change his lyrics, or dampen anything down. Now that truly is brave. His music is ruthless, political, historical and uses metaphors like no one else, and above all he is true to himself and his roots, which I find is a true rarity in this genre. His music has a wide range of subject, and some songs are like lectures, which educate with his wisdom whilst other are dark tales of living in Brooklyn.

I will suggest my favourite songs, but again I really think if you have read this you download his albums, all of them, and listen to them, this is hip hop that we should all be listening to. and this is a great entry point for the genre.

Creation & Destruction, Poverty of Philosophy (this one is full of wisdom), Freedom of Speech, The Prophecy, Dance with the Devil (this one is so powerful, with a great narrative).

Moon

I was browsing on Spotify today to find Clint Mansell as I have always been a big fan of Clint’s epic scores for great films such as ‘Requiem for a Dream’ and ‘Pi’. And revealed that he has created the entire soundtrack for this film, which in my opinion looks very exciting, Sam Rockwell is a strong actor, that I appreciate, hes not stunning like most of the junk actors Hollywood pushes out, which fits for realism. and his characters always portray emotions perfectly, fitting to the situation. I’d like to see him as a villain (maybe the Riddler) in a Batman film, though word is he’s playing a rival of Tony Stark (Iron Man) in ‘Iron Man 2′ . The robot in ‘Moon’ echoes ‘HAL’ from ’2001: A space Odyssey”, it is nice to see some cross referencing/inter-textuality, I feel that little monitor with the emotes is a scary yet modern replacement for the red eye of HAL. Even though I think I may have grasped the storyline from the trailer, I still really want to see it, but haven’t seen it advertised on TV? IMDB states that its UK release date was on the 17th of July, I hope I haven’t missed it.

Running Up That Hill

Can’t stop listening to this song at the moment, very powerful. I’ve always been a fan of Placebo but I prefer their slower stuff. I first heard this song in the new Daybreakers film, it look great and is a good concept for a Vampire film, perfect casting, Sam Neill scares the shite out of me as a vampire. The song is from the album ‘Sleeping with Ghosts’ (on the Bonus cover Disc). Enjoy as I have.

It has occurred to me that boredom is equal to depression. Recently I have become extremely bored sinking me to new lows. I question what it is that the western world really offers me in these times, a bite to eat or a DVD to watch, yet none of these things quench, even activities I would usually enjoy offer me nothing at this time. Psychologically boredom is caused by lack of variety, and personal affluence, of which I lack at the moment. Recession and a routine of work at the weekend, then doing nothing in the week, except constantly stumbling through the Internet, with the occasional piece of design work. Everyday I find myself in the same positions, telling myself tomorrow will be better, I even promise to get up feeling positive, but soon after the kettle has boiled I find myself in the same place as the day before, and the one before that. I’d like to think that my family could offer me social benefit, which they do, don’t get me wrong but only to some extent. I fear I have cut to many people off in the area I live, every summer is the same: Kip returns with no money, works to pay rent, but doesn’t have enough shifts for extra money to spend on himself/ socializing, thus people are left behind. Money, that’s another thing, lack of money means that I can’t feed my consumerist soul, I don’t like being like this, its just how I am, A consumerist. Consuming to feel content.

Positive thought fails, and I pray that tomorrow brings happiness.

The Glass is not half full, its not even half empty, its broken, and I have cut my hand on it, and there is no dustpan and brush.

Logo?

I’m currently working on the Destroy (my company’s) logo. And so far have the jellyfish part done…. its looking good, im just about to start the next bit, which is the shield, but don’t know what to put on it? I was thinking of having it divided into four then having a spray can (to depict art) in one, maybe a vinyl (to depict music) in the other, but after that I have gone blank.I also believe I’m going to add two automatic machine guns to the equation, but don’t want to be cliche. Are AK-47′s Cliche, I don’t think so? Any suggestions would be great for both bits of the logo, to any on who reads this Blog ?
